Summary

A small pit containing sherds of a straight sided Middle Bronze Age Urn, enclosing a cremation, were found during a watching brief on the Sturminster Marshall to Blandford St Mary water main in 1991.

‘Plot 32 – Small Pit 73 (*): 560mm diameter, 370mm deep with steep even sides and rounded base. The pit was recorded in the west-facing section of pipe trench. Lower fill of dark brown sandy silt (72) containing charcoal and Bronze Age pottery which appeared to line the base of the pit. Upper fill of light brown silty clay (71).’

‘OBSERVATIONS ON A PIPELINE: STURMINSTER MARSHALL TO BLANDFORD ST MARY … One small pit (ST 8970 0395) produced sherds of a straight-sided Middle Bronze Age urn, containing a cremation, of a type common within the Avon/Stour valley area (Ellison 1975, type 6).’
