Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during construction of the Sturminster Marshall to Blandford St Mary water main (7.5km) by Wessex Water between February and April 1991. Overall a low level of archaeological deposits was recorded. The main areas of interest comprised evidence of earlier prehistoric activity in the form of a Middle Bronze Age cremation pit and a collection of late Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flint. Ditches recorded close to Spetisbury Rings were thought probably to be associated with the hill fort. Other features recorded were mostly of medieval/post-medieval date and included a former building and associated features closed to the site of a Benedictine cell.
