The remains of a 14th century waterfront comprising a number of posts, a shallow trench and a dwarf stone wall or terrace was found during excavations on Thames Street in 1974. Full Description

The remains of a fourteenth century waterfront were found immediately behind a substantial 14th century building during excavations by Poole Museum at Thames Street, Poole in 1974. At least two phases of waterfront could be identified together with a single well-defined tide line. The waterfront features comprised a series of timbers, some set in stone-packed postholes, a shallow trench and a dwarf stone wall or terrace. It is difficult to interpret the detailed arrangement of these features but they do not suggest a substantial wharf. More likely the waterfront was a sloping hard on which boats could be beached.
