Summary

Stone-built house of probable 15th-16th century date was uncovered during excavations on the Old Orchard Car Park site in 1975. There was a cellar in the northern part and a stone-lined cess pit found just outside. The building was demolished in the 17th century.

Full Description

The remains of a stone-built house were found beneath 39-43 High Street, Poole during excavations by Poole Museum on the Old Orchard Car Park site in 1075. The frontage of the building was not exposed, nor was its rearmost extent. The walls were constructed of limestone. A cellar was found in the northern part of the building, with a stone-lined cess pit butting against the outside wall. The date of construction of this building is not known, but is assumed to be in the 15th-16th century. It was demolished in the 17th century. (1)
