Full Description
The remains of a stone-built house were found beneath 45-49 High Street, Poole during excavations by Poole Museum on the Old Orchard Car Park site in 1075. Only the rear of the building was excavated, the frontage was not exposed. The southwest corner of the building was exposed and the rear wall ran for a distance of 10.75m. The walls were constructed of limestone and survived six courses high. Two hearths were found built against the rear wall, but it is uncertain whether they were original or later insertions. Both had been relined with brick and appeared to have continued in use until the demolition of the building in the 17th century. Butting against the southwest wall was a stone lined cess-pit. The date of construction of this building is not known. (1)
