Full Description

A pit (pit 111) was found during a watching brief carried out by Terrain Archaeology to the rear of 49 Blandford Road, Hamworthy, in 2004. The pit was only partially exposed, but appeared to be sub-rectangular in shape with steeply sloping sides and a flat base, 1.2 m across and 0.8 m deep. It was filled with a lower layer of light brownish grey clayey sand with charcoal flecks and a layer of borwnish grey clay above. A small quantity of 1st century Roman pottery, including amphora and some briquetage was recovered from the lower levels of the pit.
