Description
Terrain Archaeology carried out a watching brief during building of an extension to the rear of 49 Blandford Road, Hamworthy. Groundworks consisted of the machine excavation of footings trenches for the extension. This extension covered an area of 9m north to south and 9.5m west to east. These were between 0.7 and 1m wide, and 1.4m deep.
Immediately over the natural sand, a layer of soft yellowish-brown clayey sand with sparse flint nodules and sparse chacoal flecks. Was discovered. This layer was 0.2m thick and contained a single 1st century AD pot sherd, and thus the soil was interpreted as buried soil of early Roman date.
A single pit was found partly within the footings. It appears to be subrectangular in shape. A small amount of 1st century briquetage was recovered from this pit.
Three small ditches were also discovered during the observations. Two of these contained dateable material in the form of pottery and briquetage to suggest also a 1st century AD date. (1) (2)
