Monument record MDO2511 - Undated feature, Stinsford

The V-shaped cross-section of a feature was observed during construction of a water pipe trench from Stinsford crossroads to Robin’s Barrow in 1985. The feature was truncated and sealed by modern ploughsoil, and could not be dated.

‘OBSERVATIONS ALONG A WESSEX WATER AUTHORITY PIPE-LINE: Stinsford crossroads to Robin’s Barrow, October-November 1985. … Section 2: SY70529220 to SY71159340. This section covers the pipe trench route along the eastern side of Slyer’s Lane from the junction of Drail Field and the field named 72 Acres south to the point where it leaves the roadside and runs north-easterly across open fields.
… An oblique ‘V’-shaped feature, maximum width 1.10 metres and 70 cm in depth, again showing only in the western section of the pipe trench, and cutting into the terrace soils was recorded at SY71109322. The upper and bulk fill of this feature consisted of an orange/grey sandy loam, sealed and probably truncated by ploughsoil, containing no finds or any visible direction of backfill. A thick charcoal layer (5 cm) lined at the bottom of this feature, which is positioned on the very top of a rise between two west running coombes. On the western side of Slyer’s Lane at this point lies a group of disused quarry pits.’
