Full Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological watching brief to the rear of 4 to 6 Cheap Street, Sherborne during groundworks for a housing development in April 1998.

A large portion of the northern part of the site had been previously truncated and filled in as made ground. The western part of the site was also levelled during the post-medieval period. There was extensive evidence for medieval and later quarrying to the rear of the existing building. A large deep pit [F108] was partly exposed in footings trenches containing medieval pottery in its upper fills. These had been partially truncated by a later pit [F109] with an almost vertical edge and a broad flat base with a uniform depth of 0.7m. It was filled with redeposited natural comprising angular limestone rubble within an orange-brown silty clay. No dating evidence was recovered from the fill[1].

No evidence for associated structures or activity was found, possibly due to the truncated nature of the site.
