Full Description
AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological watching brief to the rear of 4 to 6 Cheap Street, Sherborne during groundworks for a housing development in April 1998.
A large portion of the northern part of the site had been previously truncated and filled in as made ground. The western part of the site was also levelled during the post-medieval period. There was extensive evidence for medieval and later quarrying to the rear of the existing building. A large deep pit [F108] was partly exposed in footings trenches. The pit had almost vertical sides with a flat base at a depth of 2.4m below ground surface. It had a series of fills, the uppermost of which formed a sequence of tip lines and contained medieval pottery. These had been partially truncated by a later pit [F109] [1].
No evidence for associated medieval structures or activity was found, possibly due to the truncated nature of the site.
