Monument record MDO23291 - Julian Brewery, Wimborne Minster

Please read our .

Summary

The tithe apportionment of 1845 and map of 1847 show an inn called The Three Lions on this site. The first record of this name appears in 1824, so it is thought to be a relatively modern establishment. The documentary evidence is sketchy, but the site appears to be associated with George Habgood and Son, brewers, of the Julian Brewery, which appears to have been the brewery associated with this site. It seems that it later became a mineral water factory.

Full Description

Site of George Habgood's `Julian Brewery'. It appears to have developed from about 1866 out of the brewhouse of the Three Lions public house. It was purchased by John Groves' Hope Brewery in 1916. Remains were recorded in 1974, but the site has been developed since. Recorded by NRIM. Photographed. <1>

Documentary research as part of a desk-based assessment in connection with the proposed development of the site revealed that in 1845/7 the whole of Lot 2 formed part of an inn called the Three Lions, together with its yard, outbuildings, gardens and orchards. This name appears to have been first recorded in 1824, when the landlord was James Smith. The authors note that a victualler called Robert Smith was recorded in a directory published around 1798, and consider the possibility that the two may be related, which might imply that the Three Lions was in existence at this time. Directories from 1867 show the landlord as George Habgood; by around 1874 he was also being described as a brewer and maltster, and the firm of George Habgood and Son, Brewers, continued in West Street until around 1915. From around 1920 no brewery is listed as being associated with the Three Lions. It appears that in 1960 the former brewery premises were being used as a garage and mineral water factory. <2>
