Full Description
This feature was encountered at a depth of 1.2m below a stratigraphy of made ground (car park surface on modern gravel) above a dark brown loamy topsoil, and a loose garden soil deposit some 0.3m deep, both containing common modern finds. Below this was a yellow-brown silty clay subsoil, containing animal bone and ceramic building material. Natural deposits, consisting of orange-brown silty clay with occasional gravel, occurred at 1.1m below ground level.
The gully was shallow with steep to moderate sides and a concave base. The excavators described the filling of the gully as a single secondary fill, which was indistinguishable from the subsoil and accumulated gradually in situ. It contained pieces of animal bone, flecks of ceramic building materials, and one piece of burnt flint. It could not be dated. The animal bone was identified as cattle and pig.
The gully would appear to be parallel with, though not directly aligned with, the property boundaries of Cornmarket to the south and West Street to the north. (1)
