Description
An evaluation undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in connection with the proposed construction of new housing to the rear of 6 Church Street (Cornmarket Court). One trench measuring 3m by 1.3m was excavated using a tracked mechanical excavator with a toothless bucket until archaeological deposits were encountered, after which further excavation was carried out by hand.
The trench revealed a narrow gully, aligned N-S, at a depth of 1.2m below ground level containing animal bone, flecks of ceramic building material and one piece of burnt flint. These items could not be dated.
Soil heaps were scanned for artefacts . No other features were observed or finds recovered from the trench.
The function of the gully could not be infered due to the sparse finds and lack of datable evidence; it was suggested that the artefacts were re-deposited within the fill of the gully at a later date. It was concluded that the trench did not reveal any remains that can be regarded as significant.
