Full Description

'Several estates in Christchurch were mentioned in the Domesday Survey. HUBBORN (Hoburne, xi–xiv cent.; Huburne, xii–xiv cent.) was held at that time by Saulf's wife; her husband had held it in the time of the Confessor. It was granted to the priory about 1100 by Richard de Redvers, and most of his descendants confirmed the grant. The house, now known as Hubborn, marks the site of the estate, which, however, never in fact became a separate manor' (1).

The site of a small hamlet called Hubborne is depicted on an estate map dated 1796. the hamlet consists of 4-5 farms and associated buildings arranged around a small subrectangular green (2). By the time of the 1st edition 25 inch map (circa 1870), the hamlet had given way to a single farm: Hoburne Farm, a few of the 18th century buildings may have been incorporated into this farm as outbuildings and a lodge. The former village green became incorporated into the formal gardens of Hoburne Court, slightly to the north (3). These 19th century buildings remain largely in tact today, although the 18th century lodge was demolished at some time in the mid-late 20th century. The gardens of Hoburne court have given way to a housing estate.
