Summary

Site of Lower Lighthouse built to replace an earlier one in 1789. The commemorative plaque is now in the present lighthouse at the Bill. Replaced by a new lighthouse in 1869 which still stands.

Full Description

Site of Lower Lighthouse built in 1789 to replace an earlier one; the commemorative plaque is now in the present lighthouse at the Bill. (1) ‘New Light House’ shown in true position on 1800 and 1837 maps. (2-3) On the 1841 Tithe Map the Lower Lighthouse is shown as sketch, property marked 2348 owned by Trinity House and occupied by Charles Comben; adjacent 2349, ‘garden’ owned by Trinity House and occupied by Charles Comben. (4) Replaced by a new lighthouse in 1869.
