Full Description
Found during excavations conducted by Wessex Archaeology during January 1997 in advance of a housing development (Knotts Paddock) south of Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne. The results of the excavation have been published in PDNHAS, 121, 53-69 (1). Numbers in square brackets below refer to context numbers given in this report.
‘A rectangular pit [11], 2.5m x 2m, with vertical sides and a flat base, was cut to a depth of 0.45m through the limestone in the central southern area of the site…the stony lower fill (o.2m deep) contained no archaeological components. Pottery, mostly of 13th-14th century date, was recovered from the upper fill (0.25m deep), which also contained fragments of animal bone, shell and iron. Two small fragments of post-medieval pottery…may have been intrusive.’ (1)
