Description

Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological excavation on the south side of Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne during January 1997 in advance of a housing development. The excavations ‘…revealed evidence for activity over a wide date range, though that for some periods is only residual with little or no evidence of in situ features.’ Early Bronze Age activity was indicated by the presence of beaker and other pottery sherds in later contexts. ‘In situ Early Iron Age deposits from two shallow pits may have related to some form of mortuary activity, whilst two ditches and a post-hole provided evidence from the Romano-British period. Four inhumation burials were excavated from a discrete group in the south-west of the site, two of which were dated by radiocarbon determination, one to 370 BC- 10 AD and the other to AD 430-660. Evidence of extensive 13th and 14th century limestone quarrying was also recorded.
