Full Description
The Signal house is also shown in a J.W. Upham watercolour, ‘The Higher and Lower lighthouses’, one of a series of views 1802-5, published in 1916. (1) 1800 map shows ‘Signal House’ near higher or ‘Old Light House’ (2) and in 1828 it is in an enclosure (3). Signal House with Signal Post and Gun on 1837 map. (4) On the Tithe Map of 1841 the property marked 2347 is a ‘garden’ owned by Trinity House and occupied by Christopher Comben, the upper lighthouse keeper. (5)
