Full Description
Important stone shipping pier site, probably dating from Wren’s time in the later 17C, but first shown on a map of 1710 as 'The Crane & Pier’ (not named as King’s Pier), with a track leading down to it. (1) It is ‘King’s Pier’ in 1745 (2), King’s Key’ in 1765 (3), while in 1770 it is shown as King's Pier with blocks of stone ready for shipment (4). It is ‘Kings Key or North Pier’ in 1794 (5), Kings Quay in 1811 and 1825-26 (6-7), thereafter reverting to King’s Pier on all later maps down to 1901 when it is the site of targets. (8) A possible building at the pier is indicated on maps of 1828 and 1841. (9-10)
