Monument record MDO19615 - Quarry Tip siding, Portland

Branch from Easton & Church Hope Railway near Wakeham towards Southwell, crossing Pennsylvania Road near Perryfield Corner and following the east side of Southwell Road on a low embankment. A small locomotive was used for hauling trucks for tipping waste. In use c1901-1927, remaining section closed by 1965.

Branch from Easton & Church Hope Railway near Wakeham towards Southwell, crossing Pennsylvania Road near Perryfield Corner and following the east side of Southwell Road on a low embankment. A small locomotive was used for hauling trucks for tipping waste. (1) There was a very short siding to a probable engine shed at Perryfield Corner in 1901, when the line continued to SY 6942 7068. (2) By 1926-7 the line was ‘disused’ as far as Pennsylvania Road, and a short section of line lay abandoned to the south of this road. Near the junction with the Easton & Church Hope Railway there was a new reverse branch into Cottonfields Quarries. (3) The branch still survived in 1959 as far as the Perryfield stone works which had been built in the 1930s. (4) Closed by 1965.
