Monument record MDO19578 - Merchants' Incline, Portland

Railway first built in two parts with top and lower winding drums, later replaced by continuous incline with three rails on stone sleeper blocks, a half-way passing place and single top brake drum. Operated 1826 to 1939. Many photographs exist of the incline in operation. Sleeper blocks survive.
