Summary

Cliff exposure in Freshwater Bay may have been quarried by 1841 but quarrying active further inland on west side by 1901 and 1926. Quarry face is partly overgrown, at west side of a once larger quarry infilled by waste tips. The northern parts are buried beneath the re-aligned Southwell Road. Some of face may post-date 1926. The quarry is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1960s.

Full Description

Cliff exposure in Freshwater Bay may have been quarried by 1841 (1) but quarrying active further inland on west side by 1901 (2) and 1926 (3). Quarry face is partly overgrown, at west side of a once larger quarry infilled by waste tips. The northern parts are buried beneath the re-aligned Southwell Road. Some of face may post-date 1926. (4)

The coastal quarry described above (in 1-4) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1960s to the east of Southwell. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 155 m by 85 m. (5) The site is still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (6) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
