Summary

According to the 25-inch OS maps, there was no quarrying here before 1901 after which developments were stimulated by the opening of the Easton & Church Hope Railway. By 1926, a quarry had been opened immediately SW of a railway branch. Site is now covered with waste and levelled. The quarry had expanded by 1959 when there were two cranes here. The older quarried face, with stockpiles and bank to the east, survived in 1999 at the north end of modern quarry workings.

Full Description

According to the 25-inch OS maps, there was no quarrying here before 1901 after which developments were stimulated by the opening of the Easton & Church Hope Railway. By 1926, a quarry had been opened immediately SW of a railway branch. Site is now covered with waste and levelled. (1-2) The quarry had expanded by 1959 when there were two cranes here. (3) The older quarried face, with stockpiles and bank to the east, survived in 1999 at the north end of modern quarry workings. (4)

The early- to mid-20th century Limestone quarry, described above in (1-4), is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s. The quarry was plotted to its extent seen in this period and is visible over an area measuring approximately 320 m by 130 m, centred on SY 69428 71111. (5) The southern part of the quarry is visible as an earthwork on aerial imagery of 2009 and the northern part of the quarry has been filled in. (6) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
