Summary

Large quarry area developed during C19, shown on maps from 1800 onwards, with much already worked by 1863. Now mostly backfilled and much redeveloped as Tradecroft industrial trading estate. Wide Street Works and limekilns are listed elsewhere. The quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s extending to the south in the area of Bowers Quarries and to the north in the area of Tout Quarries.

Full Description

Large quarry area developed during C19, shown on maps from 1800 onwards, with much already worked by 1863. (1-7) Now mostly backfilled and much redeveloped as Tradecroft industrial trading estate. Wide Street Works and limekilns are listed elsewhere.

The quarrying area of Trade Quarries, described above in (1-7), is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s extending to the south in the area of Bowers Quarries (MWX3877) and to the north in the area of Tout Quarries (MDO19490). The quarries were plotted to their extent in the 1940s and are visible over an area measuring approximately 1580 m by 445 m, centred on SY 68467 72290. (8) The majority of the quarry area had been filled in by the date of the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (9) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
