Monument record MDO19493 - Wide Street Tunnel, Tout Quarries, Portland

West portal of tramway tunnel beneath Wide Street. Arch has no apparent date stone. The unusual north-east alignment is explained by the 1863 map which shows that it served a branch returning into the quarry from the 1862 Wide Street tunnel tramway. By 1889 track re-alignment made this a branch from the Tout side. Still in use in 1900 but rails removed by 1926.
