Summary

Large quarry area bounded to north by King Barrow and Waycroft Quarries, east and south-east by Admiralty Quarries, south by Independent Quarries and west by Easton Lane. West portion begun as Maggot Quarry by 1828 and enlarged by 1841.Worked actively by 1863 and 1889, as indicated on maps. Served by branches from Merchants' Railway; large areas are backfilled and difficult to interpret. The quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s.

Full Description

Large quarry area bounded to north by King Barrow and Waycroft Quarries, east and south-east by Admiralty Quarries, south by Independent Quarries and west by Easton Lane. West portion begun as Maggot Quarry by 1828 (1) and enlarged by 1841 (2).Worked actively by 1863 and 1889, as indicated on maps. (3-4) Served by branches from Merchants' Railway; large areas are backfilled and difficult to interpret.

The quarries in the vicinity of Withie Croft Quarries, described above in (1-4), are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s, extending to the south in the area of Independent Quarries (MDO19500), to the north east in the area of Admiralty Quarries (MDO19487), to the north to Waycroft Quarries (see MDO19477) and to the north west to King Barrow Quarries (MDO19481). The quarries were plotted to their extent in the 1940s and are visible over an area measuring approximately 1580 m by 445 m, centred on SY 69352 72701. (8) The central and north western part of the quarry area had been filled in by the date of the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (9) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
