Full Description
D. J. Markell conducted a small excavation to the NW of Wick Lane, Christchurch, during March 1973. This excavation was subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The 4m x 3m trench was located on the projected line of the town defences in order to investigate them further. The excavation revealed a late medieval gully cutting across and perpendicular to the rubble remains of the medieval town defences. This gully was approximately 0.3m deep and contained 13th-14th century pottery and a silver penny of King John (1199-1216) in its fill. The fill was similar in nature to the overlying subsoil. Possible stake holes ran along the bottom and sides of the gully but made no discernible pattern.
The gully was also associated with a sump-like feature [F5], which resolved into two features, [F5a] 0.6m deep and filled with dark brown clayey soil, and [F5b] 0.2m deep with a fill of darker and finer soil and sealed by 13th-14th century clay layer [F2]. Both were cut into the upper fill of ditch [F6] which contained 12th-13th century pottery.
