Description

D. Markell directed an excavation in Trokes Garden, NW of Wick Lane, Christchurch during March 1973 in order to investigate the line of the town defences. The trench was sited on the projected line of the stone rubble of the defences previously found on site X5. The position and area of excavation (4m x 3m) was dictated by garden usage. The excavation revealed stone rubble from the robbed town defences and evodence which suggested a defensive ditch. No dating evidence for the defences was recovered. The stone rubble was cut by a gully dated to the 13th-14th century.
