Summary

Earthworks of a Medieval field system with strip lynchets. The lynchets have been much reduced by ploughing and average 8 metres wide and 0.6 metres high. The parallel linear features are visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery to the west of Piddletrenthide village. The features are most complete within King Grove Down but more fragmented boundaries extend to the north. The features cover an area Of ove 51 hectares, they were digitally recorded durinf the Upper Cerne and Piddle valleys AIM project.

Full Description

(Area centred at SY 69759925) Strip lynchets; fairly well defined. <1>

Two groups; centred at SY 69759935, `A'; and SY 69559925, `B'.
A. A series of E-W lynchets, very regularly spaced at the east end and typically Md in type. On the S facing slope of King's Grove Bottom the lynchets are less regular in their spacing; the average height of the lynchets is 107m.

B. A small number of strip lynchets on the N facing slope, much lower than those in group 'A'. These are possibly Md, but could have been formed in more recent times by occasional ploughing. The whole area is under grass. <2>

Strip lynchets of the former open fields of Middle Tithing cover some 30 acres on both sides of King's Grove Bottom (SY 693992-SY 707996) and are arranged in at least 6 interlocked furlong blocks. Before enclosure, the 3 west furlongs lay in King's Grove Field and the 3 east furlongs in Dutnole Field. <3>
