Full Description
A gravel deposit, probably the remains of the western approach road to Durnovaria was revealed beneath the modern road surface during an evaluation carried out by Wessex Archaeology on Bridport Road, Poundbury, Dorchester in 2001.
Immediately below the modern road makeup was a layer of moderately compact small to medium sized sub-rounded to sub-angular gravel within a stiff mid-brown sandy clay matrix, surviving up to 0.17m thick. This is probably part of the makeup of the Roman road. It lay directly on top of a layer of clay, overlying the natural chalk.
