Description
Wessex Archaeology undertook an evaluation during road realignment works on Bridport Road, Poundbury, Dorchester in 2001. Four machine-excavated trenches 4m by 2m across were excavated. All revealed a similar stratigraphic sequence: below the modern road makeup was a layer of moderately compact flint gravel within a stiff mid-brown sandy clay matrix, which is probably the remains of the Roman road, overlying natural clay and chalk. A small quantity of worked flint was recovered from the clay.
