Summary

Wessex Archaeology undertook salvage recording during the construction of new houses on the site of Hawthorn Lodge, Dorchester in 1986. A total of 151 soil-filled grave cuts were observed and planned, but none were excavated. The majority of the graves were oriented roughly E-W with eleven aligned roughly N-S. The graves appeared to be part of a well-ordered cemetery, with the graves laid out in rows running roughly N-S. There were no intercutting graves recognised. No dating evidence was recovered but it is likely that this was part of a late Roman inhumation cemetery running to the north of Bridport Road.
