Description
During 1986, Wessex Archaeology undertook salvage recording during the construction of new houses on the site of Hawthorn Lodge, Dorchester. A total of 151 rectangular features cut into the chalk were identified and planned in the footprint of the new buildings. The size and shape of these features suggest they are likely to be late Roman graves. They were aligned in rows, with the majority of the graves oriented E-W, the remainder were N-S. There was no evidence for any intercutting of graves.
None of the graves was excavated and no bones were recovered.
