Monument record MDO19023 - South Grove Cottage, Trinity Street, Dorchester; Roman Oven

A small Roman horseshoe-shaped oven, built of limestone, with a firing pit to the south was discovered during excavations at South Grove Cottage, Trinity Street, Dorchester in 1938. This oven was partly destroyed by a later Roman building.

The remains of a Roman oven were excavated to the rear of South Grove Cottage, Trinity Street, Dorchester in 1938. It was horseshoe-shaped and built of limestone with a firing pit to the south. This oven had been partly truncated by a later Roman building. This feature is not securely dated but may be third or fourth century. (1)
