Monument record MDO18660 - Library Site, Colliton Park, Dorchester; Roman Oven 1

Oven 1 was one of eight ovens found during the excavations on the site of the new Dorset County Library, Colliton Park, Dorchester in 1961-63. Oven 1 was in the northern part of the excavation area, to the northwest of Building 2 and east of Building 3. It was cut into the natural chalk and comprised an oval oven chamber constructed of mortared limestone, with a firing floor to the north. It was constructed in an open area where no buildings were constructed and surrounded by rough limestone paving. It may have been contemporary with Oven 6 which lay in the same open area to the south of Oven 1. The oven was filled with rubble, chalk and ash and covered by limestone slabs after it went out of use. No dating evidence was recovered.
