Full Description
A post-medieval stone-lined well was discovered in Trench 1 during the evaluation excavation undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1989 at 58/60 High West Street, Dorchester. The well had a mortared limestone lining and had a domed brick capping. This may have had a brick culvert leading into it. The upper 0.15m of the well was excavated, at which depth there was a limestone slab capping. This produced some pottery of mixed 19th century date (c. 1810-1870), which gives a terminus ante quem for the capping of this well, which was probably 18th century in date.
