Monument record MDO18500 - 58/60 High West Street; post-medieval pits

Two post-medieval pits were discovered during the evaluation excavation undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1989 at 58/60 High West Street, Dorchester. In the eastern part of Trench 1 was a shallow rectangular 19th century rubbish pit which was filled with a large quantity of both finewares and coarsewares dating to the 1840s. This pit group contains some interesting and rare sherds. In Trench 2 was a large circular pit which contained mid-late 18th century pottery and some residual Roman and medieval sherds.
