Monument record MDO18499 - 58/60 High West Street; Roman chalk surface

A Roman chalk surface was discovered in Trench 2 during the evaluation excavation undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1989 at 58/60 High West Street, Dorchester. The surface comprised a thin compacted layer of chalk laid directly on top of the bedrock chalk, which was traced across most of the area of the trench. A single sherd of 2nd century pottery. It was sealed by a layer of rubble and soil, of possible late Roman date. This surface may have been part of a yard, rather than a floor within a building.
