Summary

Part of a late 18th or 19th century building was excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 1989, in advance of proposed redevelopment behind the former Dingles Store (now Princes House), Dorchester. The remains comprised a N-S limestone wall and and E-W brick wall, together with the remains of a brick and limestone floor. This building(s) is likely to be a workshop or other outhouse and cartographic evidence suggests it was originally constructed between 1772 and 1810.

Full Description

Part of a late 18th or 19th century building was excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 1989, in advance of proposed redevelopment behind the former Dingles Store (now Princes House), Dorchester (1) (2) (3). The remains comprised a N-S oriented wall of roughly coursed limestones bonded with orange clay. This wall was apparently sealed by a thin chalk and rubble make-up for a brick and limestone floor, which butted a brick wall running E-W along the southern end of the excavated area. These elements are probably part of one or more outhouses or workshops shown on maps of Dorchester dating from 1810 onwards (4) (5). There were no buildings on the site depicted on the 1772 map of Dorchester (6), which gives a terminus post quem for its construction. No evidence for its function was recovered. This building appears to have been demolished by 1854 (7).
