Full Description
Three widely scattered pits were found within the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] during the 2005 excavation by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development (1). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report (1).
Within the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] three widely spaced pits were found, which were not associated with Structure [F205] in the northwestern part of the enclosure. Pit [179] was an undated pit just to the south of Structure [F205]. It produced a small amount of roundwood charcoal and emmer wheat chaff. Emmer wheat chaff is strongly indicative of the Middle Bronze Age in this part of England (1), and is the only date indicator for this pit. Pit [95] was a small pit which lay on the southern edge of the enclosure. This pit contained no datable artefacts. Pit [57] lay within the eastern half of the enclosure and was a small pit or posthole, which produced a small quantity of Middle Bronze Age pottery.
All three pits may have been associated with activity carried out within Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204].
