Monument record MDO18150 - Greyhound Yard, Roman enclosure 5538

The SE corner of a rectilinear enclosure found during the 1984 excavations at Greyhound Yard in the SW part of the central area of the insula. It was defined by lines of postholes and was separated from Enclosure 5519 to the east by a narrow path. No contemporary activity within this enclosure was identified.

Found during the excavations carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1984 prior to the redevelopment of the area of the former Greyhound Yard. (1) The results of the excavation were published together with the results of the adjacent Old Methodist Chapel excavations. (2) The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the published report (2).

The SE corner of a rectilinear enclosure was found to the west of enclosure 5519. It was defined by a line of postholes, some with stone post packing along the east side and was divided from the west end of Enclosure 5519 by a pathway about 1.6m wide. The southern side was defined by four postholes on a line slightly to the south of the south side of Enclosure 5519.

No contemporary activity within this enclosure was identified.
