Monument record MDO18109 - Greyhound Yard Late Neolithic gully 4033

A curving gully set about 4-6 m to the west of the Late Neolithic postpit arc 5540, found during the 1984 Wessex Archaeology excavations at Greyhound Yard, Dorchester. It is probably related to the monument, perhaps a marking out ditch.

Found during the excavations carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1984 prior to the redevelopment of the area of the former Greyhound Yard. (1) The results of the excavation were published together with the results of the adjacent Old Methodist Chapel excavations. (2) The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the published report (2).

An irregular ditch between 1-2m wide and 0.3-0.7m deep, generally with a V-shaped profile. It was on the same arc and alignment as the postpit arc 5540 and may be associated with it, perhaps dug as a boundary marker once the posts had been raised. The soil fill suggested a rapid initial silting episode. There is no dating evidence other than some intrusive Roman finds.
