Full Description

Found during the excavations at St George's Road, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report.

Horse burial [01083] was found cutting the edge of the Roman curvilinear enclosure ditch. It was a rectangular pit 2.1m long, 0.8m wide and 0.4m deep, aligned NE-SW, which contained the carcass of an adult male horse. The left hindlimb had been removed an placed alongside the head in order to fit the body into the grave.

No dating evidence was recovered, but it is most likely to be medieval or post-medieval in date.
