Full Description

A post-built rectangular structure found during the excavations at St George's Road, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report.

Structure [01465] was a post-built rectangular structure in the northern part of the enclosure, close to the edge of the excavation. It consisted of six postholes defining an area of 2m square. The postholes were between 0.25-0.5m in diameter with postpipes. The structure was probably a four post structure with the southern posts being replaced by another pair of postholes. No internal or external surfaces associated with this structure survived. No dating evidence was recovered.

It was one of two post-built rectangular structures within the rectangular ditched enclosure. A late Roman or post-Roman date has been suggested for structure [01462] and structure [01465] may be of a similar date. It was aligned on the Late Roman rectangular enclosure system. A pin-beater of possible 7th century AD date was found in the enclosure ditch.
