Full Description
A, SY 67739808. B, SY 67739815. C, SY 67649812. D, SY 67689815. E, SY 67709804. A, B and E are three grass covered bowl barrows. Diameters range from 8.0 to 15.0m and heights from 0.2 to 0.4m. A, has a slight ditch on the east and E, has a ditch 1.0m wide, 0.1m deep. The centres of B, and E, are slightly mutilated exposing flints.
C and D are two probable bowl barrows wich have been completely gutted and now appear as slight depressions with only the perimeters of the original mounds remaining and a quantity of large flints are exposed in the interiors. Each would have had a diameter of 13.0m; C. 0.6m high, is completely destroyed on the west side, D, 0.4m high, only the east half remains. See air photo CPE/UK/2475/3123. (1)
All these barrows have been severely mutilated - probably by excavation. (2)
All ploughed out but currently visible as cropmarks. (4)
A probable Bronze Age bowl barrow is visible as a 13.5m in diameter sub-circular banked earthwork on aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery. The suggestion of an outer ditch is visible on a 1974 RAF aerial photograph . The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project. <6, 7>
