Summary

Formal gardens at Mapperton Manor created in 1927 and modified since 1955. They comprise three main terraced areas with the more formal arrangments present close to the house. One of the terraces contains an orangery of 1966-68. Little is known of the gardens which predated the present ones. Crop marks of garden layout visible on an aerial photograph taken by Francesca Radcliffe.

Full Description

Formal gardens of c.2 1/2ha, created 1927, with additional farmland and woodland of c.32ha. Gate piers with eagles C18, 15m to west of house, and further C18 gate piers across road. Lime avenue of 250m from north extends 250m south beyond west front of house. C20 ha ha to west of stables, giving onto open fields. Formal gardens created in valley to east of Mrs Laboucherie, modified by Victor Montagu since 1955. Gardens proceed in 3 main terraced areas for c.250m north-south.
