Full Description
Iford Bridge crosses the river Stour between Christchurch and Bournemouth. It is in three different sections of differing dates of construction.
The western section is of late eighteenth century date. It is of Purbeck limestone ashlar and has four round-headed arches with piers standing on mud islets, with cornice above and parapet with coping. There are cutwaters between the arches with recessed circular panels above them on the south side of the bridge.
The middle section is of mid seventeenth century date. It is of Purbeck limestone ashlar with four round-headed arches with pointed cutwaters between and red brick parapet with stone coping.
The eastern section dates from the late eighteenth/early nineteenth cehtury. It is of red brick with stone coping to parapet. There are six round-headed arches with stone linings to soffits. The arches are alternately large and small with pilasters between: in the centre, two pilasters form a blind round-headed panel.
The causeway at the east end has brick walls with stone coping, with pilaster strips on the outside and one blind arch. It dates to c. 1800. (1)
