Summary

A series of parallel medieval strip lynchets are visible as earthworks on lidar imagery on the south west facing slope at Stony Head, immediatey to the north of the Dorchester Road. They run roughly north west-south east for up to 510m and were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP project

Full Description

"Lynchets on the S.W. slope of STONY HEAD, extend for about 200 yards, with terraces from 12 to 30ft. Wide. There are two other terraces further down the slope. [All in Area A]. <1>

A. Centred at [SY 49609335] B. Centred at [SY 49879365] … Area B. Approximately parallel strip lynchets which are partly portrayed on OS plans. The lynchets are pronounced. Some are under grass and some are surmounted by modern hedges or scrub. See AP/CPE/UK/2431/3161. <2>

A: Centred at SY 49429290; B: Centred at SY 49589317. … B: An area of similarly pronounced Md. Strip lynchets around the S. and W. sides of a low hill. The lynchets are grass covered. Both series are visible at AP CPE/UK/2431/3160-1 <3>

‘(22) LYNCHETS, on the S.W. slope of Stony Head and about ¼ m. S. of (21), extend for about 200 yards. The terraces vary from 12 to 30 ft. in width. There are two other terraces further down the slope.’
