Full Description

[ST 57531386] GATEWAY [G.T.] (Remains of).

The Gateway. At the position indicated on the O.S. 6" there is a gateway into the garden of Clifton Maubank. It is 3.5 m. wide and consists of probably 18thc. brick pillars, square and plain, which are contemporary with the brick wall around the garden. Each pillar has a footing of moulded Ham Hill stone, 0.9 m. square and 0.2m. above ground but whether these footings are earlier or contemporary with the pillars could not be decided.

Each of the two pillars is surmounted by a carved stone horse's head, obviously connected with the horsey family, but not in situ if part of an old gateway.
