Summary

Small two storey cottage, 18th century or earlier with rough ashlar front with cement slurry finish. It has a steep roof, partly plain tiles, partly stone slates.

1. 161 GOLD HILL (East Side) No 8 ST 8622 2/32 20.6.52 II GV 2. No 8 is an C18 or earlier 2-storey, 1 window cottage. Rough ashlar front with cement slurry finish. Steep roof, partly plaintiles, partly stone slates. Weathering at 1st floor level. Casement windows, that to ground floor having wood glazing bars and shutters, on 1st floor partly lead glazed. (1)

No. 8 Gold Hill. This has a wide ledge in the west wall at the level of the flint floor suggesting it was originally single storeyed. <2>

Excavation within No. 8 Gold Hill suggests that no Medieval tenement existed here before 1539, but between 1539 and 1615 a period of upgrading of the house may apply to Gold Hill as a whole as a lesser structure was replaced by a substantial stone Building.
Gold Hill was narrower in its upper parts until the late C17th. <3>
